Health, workplace factors lead to early retirement: study

Although poor health is the main reason workers choose early retirement, a variety of workplace factors also play a role, according to a study conducted at Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

According to a study abstract, researchers reviewed eight previous studies and found work pressure, physical demands and low job satisfaction also play a role in the decision to retire early.

Study authors conducted focus groups with older workers in the printing industry -- a rapidly aging workforce -- who further indicated that a heavy work load, shift work, and lack of support from co-workers and managers may lead to early retirement. Workers said increased support from co-workers and the programs designed to improve their health -- such as access to an onsite gym -- would encourage them to stay on the job longer.

The study was published in the June issue of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
