Institute offers sleep disorder awareness training for transit employees

Washington – On Sept. 30, transit workers will be able to take a free online training course on detecting and treating sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea.

Offered through the Transportation Safety Institute of the Department of Transportation’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration, the course will cover the following topics:

  • Understanding the stages of sleep and developing optimal sleep strategies
  • Obstructive sleep apnea and other sleep disorders that can cause fatigue
  • The impact of nutrition, exercise, time of day and over-the-counter medications on sleep quality

Participants will complete a self-assessment quiz and final exam during the online course. Funded by the Federal Transit Administration, the course is in response to National Transportation Safety Board recommendations on fatigue among transit workers.
