MSHA provides guidance on equipment guarding

July 1, 2010

The Mine Safety and Health Administration last week issued a guide (large .pdf file) on guarding conveyer belts at metal and nonmetal mines. The document provides compliance information on guarding standards and shows pictures of safe guarding.

According to MSHA, 45 percent of equipment guarding injuries are the result of handling and dropping oversize heavy guards. Reaching past or around guards and inadequate size and position account for 14 percent each, followed by inherently hazardous guards (12 percent), removed guard during operation (10 percent) and climbing on guard (5 percent).
