New rule aims to reduce side-window ejections in passenger cars

January 18, 2011

Washington – A new final rule from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is intended to reduce the number of vehicle passengers ejected through side windows during rollover crashes.

According to the final rule (.pdf file) published Jan. 19, manufacturers of light passenger vehicles weighing less than 10,000 pounds must develop a countermeasure that prevents an unbelted adult from moving more than 4 inches past the side-window opening in the event of a crash. The new requirements are expected to be phased in during 2013, with all newly manufactured vehicles required to provide the protection by model year 2018.
