NIOSH plans to survey Latino workers

February 8, 2012

Washington – NIOSH is proposing to conduct a survey of Latino workers to compare differences in how immigrants and American-born workers view workplace safety.

The results will help NIOSH understand factors that contribute to persistent disparities between Latinos and American-born workers so the agency can better target intervention efforts, according to a notice published in the Jan. 26 Federal Register.

The questionnaire will be sent to approximately 600 workers in various industries – 200 Latinos who have been in the United States for less than two years, 200 Latino immigrants who have been in the country more than five years, and a control group of 200 workers born in the United States.

To account for regional differences, participants will be drawn equally from New Mexico and Ohio.

The survey will be conducted by March, NIOSH said.
