NIOSH publication addresses ATV safety

August 1, 2012

Washington – A new document (.pdf file) from NIOSH describes best practices for employers regarding work-related use of all-terrain vehicles. Best practices include providing workers who use ATVs with a helmet and eye protection, marking or removing hazards such as trenches, and offering hands-on training, the document states.

For workers, NIOSH recommends wearing personal protective equipment, conducting a pre-ride inspection of the ATV, understanding how attachments may affect the ATV’s stability and handling, driving at safe speeds, and never allowing passengers unless the ATV has an additional seat designed to carry them.
