NIOSH unveils tool to assess lead exposure

November 11, 2010

A new online resource intended to help workers identify harmful overexposures to lead was launched by NIOSH last week.

The webpage includes data on cases of elevated blood-lead levels in adults and allows users to create customized charts and tables of data from 2002 to 2008.

Workers in industries such as construction, mining and manufacturing are at risk for lead exposure. According to NIOSH, elevated blood-lead levels may indicate exposures that put workers at risk for impairment.

National prevalence rates for elevated blood-lead levels decreased by 47 percent from 1994 to 2005, but NIOSH said health problems may be associated even with low lead exposures.
