OSHA issues shipbreaking guidance

April 15, 2010

New guidance (.pdf file) from OSHA addresses the hazards and standards that apply to shipbreaking workers.

According to the agency, workers who remove gear and equipment from outdated ships and dismantle the vessels for recycling are exposed to asbestos, fall, electric shock and fire hazards. Released last week, the 29-page online-only document references and links to OSHA regulations covering these hazards to help shipbreaking employers develop a safety and health program to protect workers.
