Senate confirms new USFA head

Washington – Ernest Mitchell Jr. was confirmed as the new administrator of the U.S. Fire Administration by the Senate on Nov. 18.

A retired fire chief, Mitchell joins USFA with more than 33 years of experience, including working as the fire chief and assistant director of disaster emergency services for the fire department in Pasadena, CA. He also is a past president of the International Association of Fire Chiefs.

“With decades of experience fighting fires and leading fire service organizations, Chief Mitchell will be a great addition to our team at FEMA and a tremendous asset to firefighters and first responders around the country,” FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate said in a press release. USFA is a sub-agency of FEMA.

Mitchell was nominated to the position Aug. 2.
