Emmitsburg, MD – The Traffic Incident Management Systems manual (.pdf file) has been updated for 2012 by a partnership of the U.S. Fire Administration and Federal Highway Administration.

The updates provide the latest technical information and training guidance for fire and emergency service providers, as well as compliance information for the latest edition of FHWA’s Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

Additionally, the partnership updates information on the following technology and practices:

  • Roadway safety vests and other personal protective equipment
  • Placement of roadway warning signs
  • Effective use of emergency vehicle warning lights
  • Roadway operations safety training

In related news, USFA on April 11 announced it will be conducting a new study aimed at identifying best practices for making emergency vehicles visible to approaching motorists.

Researchers will examine emergency vehicle markings, lighting and design, and will focus on emergency vehicles that are not covered by existing regulations, USFA said in a press release.
