Workers packing on the pounds: survey

May 20, 2010

Forty-four percent of workers say they have gained weight in their current job, a slight increase from 43 percent in 2009, according to a new CareerBuilder survey of more than 4,800 employees.

More than one-quarter of respondents reported gaining more than 10 pounds, and 12 percent said they gained more than 20 pounds, a press release from the Chicago-based company said. Women were more likely than men to gain weight, with 50 percent saying they gained weight in their current position compared with 39 percent of men.

Just under half of the surveyed employees said sitting at a desk most of the day contributed to their weight gain, while 32 percent cited stress as a factor. Other reasons included regularly eating out, workplace celebrations and skipping meals because of time constraints.

Healthy, less-stressed employees are more productive and remain in their jobs longer, the release said.
