As temperatures rise during the summer – and throughout the year – Safety+Health looks at ongoing federal and state efforts to keep workers safe.

Now in its second year, the MSD Solutions Lab at the National Safety Council is committed to curbing work-related MSDs by providing industry-specific resources.

Workers at height. Stacked materials. Pedestrian, forklift and truck traffic. All in one place. “Loading docks are very dangerous areas for employees,” OSHA’s Reginald Jackson says.

“The old methodology of, ‘Oh, it could never happen here’ – that has to go out of the window,” a workplace security expert says. “Because it can.”

From 2017 to 2021, ladder-related incidents accounted for more than 800 deaths and 27,000 nonfatal injuries resulting in days away from work. “Ladders are safety equipment, not just a throwaway tool,” one expert says.
