DOT extends surface transportation funding

Washington – Congress on Dec. 21 approved the Continuing Appropriations and Surface Transportation Extensions Act, which extends funding for various Department of Transportation safety provisions.

NHTSA begins rulemaking for speed-limiter device standard

Washington – The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced it will begin the rulemaking process to establish a safety standard that would require speed-limiting devices in certain heavy trucks.

CDC: National safety belt usage increases to 85 percent

Atlanta – Six out of every 7 drivers on the road wear a safety belt when driving or riding in a motor vehicle, according to survey results from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

DOT reviews recommendations to strengthen aviation safety

Washington – The Department of Transportation’s Future of Aviation Advisory Committee on Dec. 15 submitted 23 recommendations to Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood on how to strengthen competitiveness and safety in aviation.

EPA: 21,000 die annually from radon exposure

Washington – Exposure to radon gas causes an estimated 21,000 deaths annually in the United States, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

CDC: 48 million people suffer foodborne illnesses annually

Atlanta – Approximately 48 million Americans become sick, 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 die from foodborne disease each year, according to estimates released in December by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Rule to ban handheld cell phone use for commercial drivers

Washington – A Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration proposed rule would prohibit commercial truck and bus drivers from talking on a handheld cell phone while driving.

Washington – The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on Dec.29 published a notice of proposed rule regarding hours-of-service regulations for drivers of property-carrying commercial motor vehicles.
