BPA exposure linked to heart disease: study

Exeter, England – Exposure to bisphenol A, a chemical used in hard plastic bottles and food and beverage cans, may contribute to heart disease, according to a study published in the journal Circulation.

Researchers analyzed data from 861 healthy people and 758 people who had developed coronary artery disease. Study participants were between 40 and 74 years old.

According to study authors, the people who developed heart disease had a higher concentration of BPA in their urine than the group who did not develop heart disease.

Researchers reported that BPA is probably a relatively small contributor to overall heart disease risk in comparison to established causes such as smoking, high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. The Food and Drug Administration currently is studying the effects and risks of BPA, according to FDA’s website.
