Through your responses to our surveys and the conversations we’ve had with some of you over the years, we know that keeping workers engaged is a constant challenge for safety professionals.
This month, Associate Editor Kevin Druley looks at what some employers do to maintain engagement – and ensure proper procedures are being followed – when frontline workers, supervisors and safety pros aren’t always in the same place at the same time.
It’s pretty much impossible to discuss engagement without talking about the importance of effective communication. A theme that runs through Kevin’s article is that communication is key to connection when so-called “distributed” workforces are involved. Kevin talks with two safety pros – as well as a CEO whose commitment to safety resulted in him being named one of the National Safety Council’s CEOs Who “Get It” – about how a balance of traditional communication methods and new technology can help keep connections strong.
Communication is also the bedrock of National Safety Month. This is the 30th year of the observance, created by NSC in 1996 to raise awareness about the leading causes of injuries and deaths and encourage employers to set aside time to talk with workers about prevention. Learn about this year’s four themes (one for each week) and sign up to receive free resources.
And check out Episode 75 of On the Safe Side, our podcast, to hear Kevin and his colleagues Barry Bottino and Alan Ferguson talk more about National Safety Month and sit down with NSC roadway safety expert Julia Kite-Laidlaw.
Happy National Safety Month!
