Washington – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is proposing to slash NIOSH’s budget for fiscal year 2013, while the Chemical Safety Board is seeking a slight budget increase.
NIOSH’s $475.4 million budget request (.pdf file) is nearly $47 million less than FY 2012. Part of the decrease includes the proposed elimination of education and research centers, which support academic institutions in developing or expanding occupational safety and health training programs. The Obama administration attempted to eliminate the centers last year, but Congress reinstated the funding. CDC oversees NIOSH.
Separately, CSB Chairman Rafael Moure-Eraso said in a statement that his agency’s $11.4 million budget request (.pdf file) – a 2.5 percent increase from FY 2012 – is necessary to hire additional staff to complete a backlog of incident investigations and continue its safety advocacy and outreach.
