Washington – Anne S. Ferro, administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and other agency representatives discussed (.ppt file) FMCSA’s Compliance, Safety, Accountability initiative and accompanying Safety Measurement System during a roundtable discussion in February.
According to discussion highlights published March 9 on FMCSA’s website, commercial motor vehicle carrier violations declined 9 percent in the year following full implementation of SMS in late 2010. The agency also revealed an independent study by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute that found companies who do not comply with the agency’s unsafe or fatigued driving limits have 3 times as many crashes as carriers that maintain safe limits.
In light of the findings, the agency argued for the stricter hours-of-service regulations, released Dec. 27, that currently are being debated in an appeals court.
