Washington – The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has released guidance on new medical certification requirements for commercial motor vehicle drivers’ licenses.
Beginning Jan. 30, and no later than Jan. 30, 2014, all CMV drivers must indicate what type of commerce they operate in or expect to operate in in the future. This information will be added to states’ commercial driver’s license system records. Based on the information, certain drivers must provide a medical examiner’s certificate to their state driver’s license agency.
The four types of commerce are:
- Interstate, non-excepted – Drivers must submit federal medical examiner’s certificate
- Intrastate non-excepted – Required to meet state-specific medical requirements
- Interstate excepted – Not required to submit federal medical examiner’s certificate
- Intrastate excepted – Not required to meet state-specific medical requirements
The FMCSA website offers additional guidance to help drivers determine what type of commerce they participate in. State-by-state information on where drivers can submit their information and certificates can be found on the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrator website.
