Indiana calls for increased efforts on work zone safety

Indianapolis – Indiana is calling for increased efforts to improve the safety of roadway work zones as part of National Work Zone Awareness Week (April 15-19).

The Indiana Department of Labor is urging construction contractors and industry workers throughout the state to develop work zone safety policies. IDOL Commissioner Sean M. Keefer announced April 8 that the agency will collaborate with industry stakeholders to address the hazards and exposures that lead to transportation-related incidents in and near construction work zones. These include:

  • Noisy work environments caused by motor vehicle traffic and heavy equipment
  • Flaggers and other on-foot workers being exposed to fast-moving motor vehicles or large construction equipment
  • Equipment operators facing risks of overturns, collisions or being caught in equipment
