Legislation seeks to implement oil spill commission’s findings

Washington – A new bill from House Democrats seeks to implement recommendations from a recent report on the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

The Implementing the Recommendations of the BP Oil Spill Commission Act (H.R. 501) addresses several recommendations found in the recently released National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling report (.pdf file), including:

  • Requiring new standards for blowout preventers, well design and cementing practices
  • Creating dedicated funding for federal agencies responsible for regulating and overseeing offshore drilling safety
  • Strengthening the Department of the Interior’s offshore oil safety agency

“This legislation turns the lessons of the BP oil spill into the laws that will ensure this type of disaster does not happen again in American waters,” said Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-MA), who introduced the bill Jan. 26.
