Chesham, England — Safe handling and disposal of metalworking fluids is the topic of a new video series and revised guide from the United Kingdom Lubricants Association.
“Machinists like you might be unaware of the risks posed to your health if metalworking fluids are not safely handled or regularly monitored,” says the host of the first video, which points out that water-mixed metalworking fluids can become contaminated with hazardous chemicals, metals and bacteria that can lead to contact dermatitis and lung diseases.
The videos, divided into 10 modules, are available online.
Meanwhile, the guide outlines health problems that can be caused by exposure to metalworking fluids. It also provides good practices for storage, preparation, controlling exposures and cleaning, among other topics.
“The UKLA and [Health and Safety Executive] recognize the need for this guide to reflect current good practice in managing MWF to reduce the risks of ill health in operators,” UKLA Director General David Wright writes in the publication. “The guide addresses the preparation, maintenance, and eventual disposal of MWF and contributes toward a safe working environment.”
