New fact sheet addresses solid waste industry

Washington – NIOSH recently published a fact sheet (.pdf file) on the solid waste industry, which includes collection, treatment and disposal, and other waste remediation services.

Between 2003 and 2009, the industry recorded 599 deaths – an average of 85 each year, according to the fact sheet. Most fatalities stemmed from transportation incidents, such as collisions and rollovers. Common events leading to nonfatal injuries were lifting and being struck by objects or equipment.

To prevent injuries in this industry, NIOSH recommends:

  • Implement a comprehensive safety and health program.
  • Use automated collection vehicles.
  • Use lifting equipment to prevent overexertion.
