Agencies launch safety crackdown on high-risk bus companies
Washington – The Department of Transportation and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration announced on Feb. 14 a safety crackdown targeting high-risk commercial passenger carriers.
FMCSA will be investigating specific safety-related procedures of the targeted carriers, including operating schedules, equipment storage and driver qualifications. DOT and FMCSA also called for increased enforcement of serious traffic offenses by motorcoach drivers, including unsafe lane changes or using a cell phone while driving.
The crackdown follows two recent fatal tour bus crashes – a Feb. 3 crash in San Bernardino, CA, and a Dec. 30 crash in eastern Oregon.
