San Diego — Andrew Johnson is the new chair of the National Safety Council board of directors. Outgoing Chair Mark Vergnano passed the gavel to Johnson on Monday during the Opening Session of the NSC 2019 Congress & Expo.

San Diego — After 14,261 votes were cast for 111 products from 72 companies, the results of the 2019 “Best in Show” New Product Showcase Awards were revealed Tuesday before the Occupational Keynote at the National Safety Council 2019 Congress & Expo.

‘It’s a serious problem’: Cost of dropped objects include fatalities, injuries

San Diego — Dropped objects on a worksite create a multitude of costs. In 2016, dropped objects resulted in 255 worker fatalities, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The issue is one of OSHA’s “Fatal Four” causes of construction deaths, accounting for 9.4% of fatal injuries in the industry.

OSHA inspectors present ‘Most Interesting’ cases during NSC Congress & Expo session

San Diego — The cases of a worker being killed and another suffering serious injuries while painting a mural on the side of high-rise building, an apprentice suffering injuries while working near power lines, a fatal trench collapse that resulted in another worker being injured, and an abrasive blasting incident in which a worker was fatally blasted with a hose were discussed Monday during OSHA’s “Most Interesting” Technical Session at the National Safety Council 2019 Congress & Expo.

New Campbell Institute research includes employer implementation guide for leading indicators

San Diego — Although most employers understand the effectiveness of leading indicators – tracking workplace conditions and events to prevent injuries and illnesses before they occur – they could use assistance with implementation, said Joy Inouye, lead researcher at the Campbell Institute at the National Safety Council.
