Teamsters file documents over pilot cross-border trucking program

Washington – The International Brotherhood of Teamsters on March 7 filed counterarguments (.pdf file) with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit against the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The union is claiming FMCSA’s Mexico cross-border trucking pilot program is unsafe because Mexican truck drivers do not need to meet the same safety requirements as U.S. truckers.

The Teamsters said in a press release that FMCSA already has failed by initially allowing trucking company Grupo Behr de Baja California to participate. The trucking company was later suspended after it was found to have a poor safety record. The group said it hopes its lawsuit, which was “consolidated” with a similar suit by the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, will force FMCSA to permanently discontinue the pilot program.
