Chicago – With summer approaching, three medical organizations have teamed up to issue tips to help prevent lawn mower injuries.

Tumwater, WA – The Washington State Department of Labor & Industries recently released tips for safely working outdoors in hot weather.

As summer approaches, so do the dangers of working outside during hot weather. Knowing how to work safely in hot weather can help prevent heat stress injuries and heat stroke, the most serious heat-related disorder, according to NIOSH.

Baltimore – Short-term exposure to outdoor heat may trigger respiratory disorders among elderly people, suggests a new study from Johns Hopkins University.

​What index can workplaces use to monitor conditions that may result in a heat-related illness?

Outdoor workers can be exposed to various hazards – including poisonous plants, stinging insects and venomous snakes – that can cause health problems ranging from slight discomfort to a serious allergic reaction. Experts offer advice on to help keep these workers safe.

Washington – Noting how easily heat stress can turn into heat stroke and even death, OSHA administrator David Michaels announced the kick-off of the agency’s second annual heat illness prevention campaign.

Washington – Advocacy group Public Citizen sent a petition to OSHA Sept. 1 requesting the agency enact a standard to protect workers from extreme heat exposure.

San Antonio – Traumatic injury is the leading cause of death for people between the ages of 1 and 44, and is the cause of more than 37 million emergency department visits each year, according to the National Trauma Institute. The organization warns that the number of traumas is likely to spike during the coming summer months.

Chicago – As more Americans barbecue and picnic during the summer months, the risk of food poisoning increases, the American Dietetic Association cautions.
