Prompted by recent fatal fires in Pennsylvania and Florida possibly linked to space heaters, the U.S. Fire Administration and the Quincy, MA-based National Fire Protection Association announced an initiative to promote fire safety in the winter.
As part of the initiative, USFA and NFPA are providing information about winter and holiday fire safety and preventing home fires.
According to a 2010 USFA report (.pdf file), approximately 108,400 residential building fires occur each winter. Cooking and heating are the leading causes of those fires.
