USFA releases firefighter injury statistics

Emmitsburg, MD – More than 80,000 firefighter injuries occur annually in the United States, according to a report released Feb. 23 by the U.S. Fire Administration. Based on data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System, the report (.pdf file) found that 87 percent of these fire-related injuries occur in structure fires.

Injuries are most prevalent in July, according to the report, and peak between 2 and 5 p.m. One-quarter are the result of overexertion or strain, and 38 percent result in lost work time.
