Washington — “Many times, workplaces are not safe. It is not fair, and it is against the law,” NIOSH says in a new pamphlet encouraging workers to know their rights.
The pamphlet offers strategies workers can use to help protect themselves from potential on-the-job hazards. Among them:
- Follow all safety rules at work. Talk with someone if you don’t feel safe.
- Ask questions about work-related risks.
- Enroll in a safety and health training course.
- Wear the personal protective equipment provided by your employer and ask for protection if needed.
- Talk with co-workers about workplace risks and team up to keep everyone safe.
- Join co-workers to talk with a supervisor(s) about safety risks. Suggest solutions.
- Take note of any risks or hazards you observe at work, and the date when you notice one.
The pamphlet includes a list of organizations that can help with workplace safety. “Getting help may be difficult, but you are not alone,” it states.
