Washington – The Environmental Protection Agency Office of Inspector General has requested to meet with Chemical Safety Board officials to discuss the board’s potential management challenges and internal control weaknesses.
In a recent memo sent to CSB Chairman Rafael Moure-Eraso, EPA OIG requested a June 25 meeting to review the previous year’s challenges and to discuss any new challenges that might apply. In fiscal year 2013, EPA OIG identified challenges for CSB, including a gap between the number of incidents that CSB investigates and the number of incidents that fall under its responsibility, completing investigations in a timely manner, and publishing a chemical incident reporting regulation as required by the Clean Air Act.
In addition, EPA OIG said, CSB needs to strengthen its internal controls for program, operational, administrative, accounting and financial management functions. The results of the meeting, combined with audit and evaluation reports, will be used to help shape the upcoming evaluation of CSB, the memo states.
