Washington – OSHA is considering another update to its Hazard Communication Standard, according to the Department of Labor’s latest semiannual regulatory agenda, released Nov. 21.
The current OSHA standard was updated in 2012 to align with the 3rd edition of the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals, also known as GHS. The U.N. is now working on the 6th edition of GHS. In its fall 2014 regulatory agenda, OSHA published an abstract announcing the agency’s intent to consider a standard to keep OSHA’s rule aligned with the most recent version.
OSHA has not determined the next step for the potential update, which is listed under the agenda’s “long-term action” category.
Other highlights from the regulatory agenda:
- In 2015, OSHA intends to issue final rules on confined spaces in construction; slips, trips and falls; and improving tracking of workplace injuries and illnesses.
- Proposed rules on crane operator qualifications and beryllium are planned for publication in early 2015.
- Proposed rules on eye and face protection, updates to construction standards, and clarification of employers’ duty to make and maintain records are expected by the end of the year.
