MSHA reports 7 deaths in third quarter

Arlington, VA – Seven miners died during the third quarter of 2015, bringing the total death toll through September to 25, according to preliminary data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

In comparison, eight more deaths occurred during the first nine months of last year.

Of the seven third-quarter deaths this year, five occurred at metal and non-metal mines and two took place at coal mines.

During the first half of 2015, 18 miners died. Last year, 38 miners were killed.

“These deaths remind us why we must continue our vigilance and ensure effective safety and health programs are at work throughout the industry,” MSHA administrator Joseph A. Main said in a press release. “The hard-working men and women of the mining industry deserve no less.”
