Washington – Mine operators and workers now have access to updated hazard assessment software from NIOSH.
According to the agency, EVADE 2.0 – short for Enhanced Video Analysis of Dust Exposures – offers a more comprehensive assessment of the hazards miners face by pulling together video footage and exposure data on dust, diesel and other gases, as well as sound levels.
The updated software, available for free, can process data from nearly any type of hazard sampler, including a noise dosimeter, in addition to the former system of processing software from a single, helmet-mounted camera. The new version also can synchronize and display video from any combination of video cameras – both worn and in fixed locations.
“Without a way to locate exactly when and where workers might be exposed to hazards, mine operators could only make an educated guess about the location and time of exposure,” Jessica Kogel, associate director for mining at NIOSH, said in a press release. “This latest version of EVADE gives operators a valuable tool to improve the working environment for their miners.”
