‘MAYDAY, Self Rescue, Rapid Intervention’: Firefighter safety stand-down set for June

Fairfax, VA – A safety stand-down for firefighters and emergency services workers, slated to take place June 18-24, will feature the theme “MAYDAY, Self Rescue, and Rapid Intervention.”

The International Association of Fire Chiefs and the National Volunteer Fire Council coordinate the annual event, which began in 2005.

Planned activities include helping individual firefighters recognize when they are in a “MAYDAY” situation and when they need to remove themselves from a situation, as well as using “rapid intervention” to work together to rescue a trapped firefighter.

Organizers are encouraging fire agencies to abort non-emergency activities during the week to concentrate on providing training related to the theme.
