Washington — OSHA, NIOSH and a coalition of five safety organizations – including the National Safety Council – will recognize “the successes of workplace health and safety programs” during the third annual Safe + Sound Week, set for Aug. 12-18.
The recognition “offers information and ideas on how to keep America’s workers safe,” OSHA states. The agency is encouraging employers of all sizes and from all industries to implement new safety initiatives or “energize” existing ones, as well as highlight workers’ contributions to improving safety.
More than 2,700 employers participated in last year’s event, according to OSHA. The agency lists several benefits of workplace safety and health programs, including:
- Improved compliance with laws and regulations
- Reduced costs, including those related to workers’ compensation
- Engaged workers
- Increased productivity
“Leadership commitment matters and demonstrates workplace safety is a priority,” acting OSHA administrator Loren Sweatt said in a July 22 press release. “Safe + Sound Week reminds employers that safety and health programs help businesses save money, eliminate injuries and, most importantly, save lives.”
