‘More user-friendly’: IRSST unveils digital versions of heat stress prevention tools

Montreal — Canadian scientific research organization IRSST has released digital versions of its tools for managing heat stress in the workplace.

One of the three diagnostic apps allows users to calculate “corrected air temperature” by making a quick calculation of the heat risk using a thermometer or psychrometer. The result is displayed along with hydration instructions and suggested preventive measures.

The other two apps help employers determine alternate work/rest regimens according to American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists threshold limit values and Quebec’s occupational health and safety regulations.

“These tools can be used by people working indoors or outdoors,” Capucine Ouellet, a certified occupational hygienist in IRSST’s research and expertise department, said in an Aug. 6 press release. “The new online versions are much more user-friendly.”

Previously, the tools – available in English and French – were available only in Microsoft Excel files.
