Greenbelt, MD — An unannounced inspection blitz of commercial motor vehicles resulted in 12.6% of those checked being placed out of service for brake-related violations, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance recently announced.
On May 26, CVSA inspectors checked 10,091 trucks and buses in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Brake Safety Day inspection resulted in 1,273 vehicles being taken out of service for brake violations.
“Inspectors conducted their usual inspections and reported brake-related data to CVSA for Brake Safety Day,” CVSA President John Samis said in a press release. “We are sharing the results to call attention to the importance of commercial motor vehicle brake safety.”
The event was part of CVSA’s Operation Airbrake, conducted in partnership with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, and Mexico’s Ministry of Communications and Transportation and National Guard.
CMV inspectors throughout North America will perform announced and unannounced brake system inspections Aug. 22-28 during CVSA’s annual Brake Safety Week, part of Brake Safety Awareness Month.
