Economic uncertainty taking a toll on workers’ mental health: survey

San Mateo, CA — Lost sleep, strained relationships and feeling distracted on the job are some of the negative outcomes workers are experiencing because of the uncertain economy.

That’s the conclusion of a recent survey of 1,000 employed adults conducted in October by Harris Poll on behalf of Franklin Templeton and the Retirement Innovation Initiative. Results show 66% of respondents reported feeling negative mental or emotional impacts related to the economy. Approximately 30% said they’ve lost sleep, 25% are experiencing strain in their relationships and 22% said they’re distracted at work. Additionally, 42% noted they feel “highly stressed” by their financial health – up from 35% the previous year.

“With the stress of a potential recession on the horizon, it’s critical for employers to check in with their employees to see how they’re feeling and offer comprehensive, personalized support,” Yaqub Ahmed, head of U.S. retirement, insurance and 529 at Franklin Templeton, said in a press release.
