This month, Safety+Health Associate Editor Alan Ferguson looks at fleets. For many of us, “fleet” conjures images of hundreds of similar-looking trucks. But Alan talks with experts who point out that if you work for a small business that has, say, two minivans, you’ve got a fleet – and should have policies and driver training in place.
The experts in Alan’s article are familiar to me. Rose McMurray is a former chair of the National Safety Council’s Transportation Division and Joe Mokrisky is the current chair. Both are passionate about safety and have generously contributed their time and expertise to NSC and the safety community.
Are you familiar with NSC Divisions? They’re industry- and interest-specific groups of NSC member employees “organized to provide those with similar safety interests the ability to connect with others” and “add their voice to advance safety for all workers.”
The Divisions have been around almost as long as NSC, says NSC Library Manager Alaina Kolosh, who also serves as council historian. She adds that the Council and its members have modified Division structure over the years “to respond to what they saw as the greatest safety challenges of the time and reflect the ever-changing nature of industry in America.”
