Every year, Safety+Health dedicates a large portion of one issue to coverage of the NSC Safety Congress & Expo. And every year, I use my Editor’s Note that month to invite safety and health pros to stop by the S+H booth at the show and talk with us.
Some people want only to say hello or let us know they read the magazine. We love that. But we also welcome thoughts on what readers like or dislike – and what we can do better.
Shortly after I became editor of S+H, I was at Congress & Expo when a man stopped by our booth with a purpose. He didn’t like that our articles and safety tips always referred to “companies.” He worked for a municipality, so “company” made him feel excluded. The next day, a safety pro from the military stopped by and said essentially the same thing.
Our editorial team made an immediate style change.
I’ll always be grateful to those gentlemen. If they hadn’t provided honest feedback, they and maybe thousands of other readers might have continued to feel that the magazine didn’t recognize them.
I’ve been at NSC for over two decades now. Reading preferences and attention spans have changed. And safety pros are dealing not only with traditional safety issues, but also with fast-happening changes to the world of work. We want S+H to help you in your efforts.
