Greenbelt, MD — Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance inspectors recently placed 12.9% of the trucks and buses they inspected out of service for violations related to transporting hazardous materials and dangerous goods.
As part of the association’s HM/DG Road Blitz from June 9 to 13, the inspectors checked 4,629 vehicles and their cargo tanks to ensure they met loading and securement requirements. CVSA reports that 598 of the vehicles were placed out of service.
Seventy vehicles lacked the required emergency response information, which is intended to “facilitate a quick and coordinated response to incidents involving hazardous materials, minimizing potential harm to people, property and the environment.”
A CVSA press release calls a hazardous material a “substance or material that poses an unreasonable risk to health, safety and property when transported in commerce.” The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration enforces rules and regulations on the shipment of these materials.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration supports the Road Blitz alongside PHMSA and Transport Canada.
