Mast climber best practices: Canadian safety organization issues guide

Toronto — A free guide from the Infrastructure Health and Safety Association highlights best practices for safely using mast climbing work platforms.

Common on construction sites or for working on building facades or maintenance projects, mast climbing work platforms provide safe and efficient access to elevated work areas. They’re versatile and adaptable to a variety of settings when working at height.

The guide is designed to “help workers understand how to set up, operate and maintain mast climbers to reduce the risk of falls and other hazards.” It’s divided into nine sections:

  3. Mechanical considerations
  4. Inspection
  5. Fall protection
  6. Design specifications
  7. Hazard alert
  8. Access and egress
  9. Worker training

Workers must be properly trained to operate an MCWP. Employers should ensure training has been successfully completed and is up to date.
