As with all personal protective equipment and clothing, “comfort is key” to ensuring workers wear it, said Kevin Barger, general manager of Twisted X Work.
Barger said he’s “seeing an increased need for lighter weight boots that are developed to offer more breathability.”
Added Kate Harrison, director of the Performance Fit Lab at BOA Technology: “Materials used in boots and shoes are becoming increasingly high tech, enabling the protection workers need without being cumbersome.”
After all, Barger said, “comfort enhancements enable … less fatigue.”
Harrison noted that “footwear should provide a snug, yet not restrictive, fit around the foot and ankle,” adding that “safety footwear is critical for protection, but it also has a significant impact on the health and productivity of workers over time.
“The materials often used to protect from punctures, shocks, etc., are usually heavy and stiff, which can affect a worker’s movement and contribute to overuse injuries. New designs, materials and technologies allow workers to have well-fitting footwear that is lighter and more supportive than traditional models. This can reduce the likelihood of pain and fatigue, which can limit workers’ capacity over time on the job.”
That’s why it’s so important to make sure workers are wearing the right boot for the job, Barger said.
“Your environment and unique needs should drive you to the right footwear solution.”
