Trends in … respiratory protection

‘There is a lot of education that needs to happen here’

Protecting workers from respiratory hazards goes far beyond handing out masks, Stephanie Lynch says.

“I still see employers trying to do the right thing by offering respiratory protection against an inhalation hazard in the workplace but not understanding the selection process, the importance of training or the value of fit testing,” the senior technology and research manager at OHD said. “Proper fit and consistent use are just as critical as the equipment itself. Even the best respirator can’t protect if it doesn’t seal properly or is worn incorrectly.”

Fit is dynamic, too, said Nels Anderson, business director – health and safety solutions at TSI Inc.

“Biological changes can change how a respirator fits a person,” he noted. “So, even if it fit last year or last month, it may not protect you now. Things as little as a bit of stubble on your face can keep a respirator from sealing appropriately, which renders the protection completely ineffective.”

That’s why “proper fit testing isn’t a one-time event,” stressed Patrick Bello, product portfolio manager – respiratory at Bullard. “It must be repeated annually and whenever physical changes occur (weight gain/loss, dental work, facial scarring).”

His advice is to “establish clear protocols for fit testing documentation, cartridge change-out schedules and user training refreshers. Assign specific personnel responsibility for program oversight. Many programs fail because organizations underestimate the administrative burden.”

Lynch points out that many employers worry about the comfort of the respiratory protection, whether it’s compatible with other personal protective equipment and which hazards it protects against.

“There is a lot of education that needs to happen here,” she said. “I advise focusing on proper risk assessment, fit testing and ongoing training to ensure protection.

“Comfort and compliance improve significantly when users are involved in selection and education.”
