Orthopaedic surgeons warn against ill-fitting shoes and bags

Rosemont, IL – Having correct-size shoes and bags could help you avoid foot and back pain, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons is reminding consumers.

Ill-fitting shoes can leave you with corns, hammer toes or bunions, as well as cause knee and lower back pain, AAOS notes. Carrying large purses and briefcases put you at risk for pain in the shoulder, neck and back.

To avoid joint and muscle strain or other injuries, AAOS recommends the following.

For bags:

  • Pack lightly and carry only what you need that day. Your handbag should weigh no more than 10 percent of your body weight.
  • Pack heavier items low and toward the center.
  • Choose a backpack with padded and adjustable straps.

For shoes:

  • Keep heel height under 2¼ inches if you walk long distances.
  • Try on new shoes at the end of the day, which is when your feet are at their largest.
  • Avoid shoes that make your toes feel pinched or cramped.
