My first exposure to the world of heavy construction was going to work with my grandfather when I was a kid. He was an equipment operator/supervisor, working for a major agriculture company that built haul roads and water retention ponds.
Fast-forward to 1987 after I was discharged from the Air Force: I went to work for a municipal water district running equipment. In 1995, I started with a heavy construction company that did highway work, bridges and pipeline. Most of my job there was transporting heavy equipment and involved logistics from job to job. Now with my current employer, I’m doing the same job of transporting heavy equipment and managing logistics. Mid-2018, the opportunity came about with my employer for a safety coordinator. I threw my hat in the ring and was offered the job.
So, my career in safety found me. I figured that with my years of experience in the industry, I could be of benefit.
Over the years, I’ve been around many safety managers – both good and bad. I’ve always wanted to be one of the good ones. Fortunately, my company has let me run the “safety department” as I think it should be run.
I’ve been able to attend many seminars and was able to get a Certified Safety Manager certification through the National Association of Safety Professionals. Who says an old dog can’t learn new tricks?
The number of safety incidents have come down dramatically in the few years I’ve taken on the job. My biggest motivation is people. Over the years, I’ve seen and been involved in some things that should’ve never happened, so I do whatever I can to help others stay safe and healthy. I look forward to what the future holds with being involved with the safety of other people.
