Arlington, VA — The Mine Safety and Health Administration is accepting applications for more than $10.5 million in state grants for safety and health training and retraining of miners and mine operators.
Grant funding is open to state, tribal and territorial governments in any state where mining occurs. An agency press release says MSHA may provide up to 80% of program costs under state grant funding, with the recipient covering at least 20% of costs.
“MSHA recognizes state training programs are a key source of the mine safety and health training and education,” the release states. “The agency encourages state programs to use grants to make training a priority for small mining operations and underserved mines and miners, such as miners employed in shell dredging and surface stone, sand, and gravel mines. The agency also emphasizes training on miners’ statutory rights under the Mine Safety and Health Act.”
The deadline to apply is June 12. The grants are set to be awarded no later than Sept. 30.
