Focus on the walk

“Whether it’s walking the factory floor, taking a stroll outside during a break or getting from one meeting to another, we’re on our feet at least part of the day,” the National Safety Council says. “With all of that foot traffic, there’s always the potential for a fall.”

According to Injury Facts, an online source of preventable death and injury statistics compiled by NSC, falls to the same level are a leading cause of preventable workplace injuries causing days away from work.

Distracted walking is one reason for these days away from work. Avoid injury when walking by:

  • Stepping to the side and out of the way of others if you need to read something while on the go.
  • Watching where you’re going. Having an intense conversation, either on the phone or with another person next to you, can be distracting. “You need to be able to see changes in elevation, cracks or holes in flooring, and other hazards,” NSC says.
  • Not rushing, especially in high-traffic areas and around corners. Slow down and anticipate that other people might come into your path.
  • Keeping your line of vision clear. Don’t let packages or boxes block your view.
