Washington — FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security’s Ready Campaign are reminding everyone that “disasters happen” and encourages you to “prepare now” and “learn how” during this year’s National Preparedness Month.
The initiative, which runs every September, promotes the importance of preparedness for disasters such as earthquakes, floods, tornadoes and wildfires. It includes a digital engagement toolkit, videos, publications and other resources, as well as public service announcements in 12 languages.
Each week will have a different theme:
- Sept. 1-8: Make and practice your plan.
- Sept. 9-15: Learn lifesaving skills.
- Sept. 16-22: Check your insurance coverage.
- Sept. 23-30: Save for an emergency.
“The devastating hurricanes and wildfires of 2017 reminded the nation of the importance of preparing for disasters,” the Ready Campaign states. “Often, we will be the first ones in our communities to take action after a disaster strikes and before first responders arrive, so it is important to prepare in advance to help yourself and your community.”
