MSHA introduces mobile inspection system

Arlington, VA — The Mine Safety and Health Administration has begun equipping its inspectors with the Mobile Inspection Application System in an effort to improve mine inspection processes and streamline technology.

According to MSHA, the system incorporates the elements of a less portable pre-existing method into one application that offers secure data storage and greater ease of use during inspections.

Features include:

  • A lightweight, durable, Microsoft Windows-based tablet with Wi-Fi capability and camera, video, voice recorder, touch screen, digital pen and Bluetooth technology.
  • An app with photo capture and fillable, prepopulated forms.
  • Service-oriented architecture for data transfer between devices and MSHA’s Standardized Information System.

“Enabling mine inspectors to work more efficiently means more time to focus on the health and safety of America’s miners,” MSHA administrator David Zatezalo said in a Feb. 22 press release. “MSHA’s Mobile IAS is expected to improve the quality of information by eliminating redundancy, and provide more timely information for inspectors.”
